About Fairfield County
With 957,419 residents at the 2020 Census, Fairfield County holds about a quarter of Connecticut's population. Its four cities, Bridgeport, Stamford, Norwalk and Danbury, hold much of the county's commercial and industrial space: the I-95 and Metro-North corridor along the shore, the Route 8 and Route 25 corridors north of Bridgeport, and the I-84 and Route 7 area around Danbury.
Connecticut has had no county government since 1960, so the county is a geographic area only. Zoning, permits and property taxes are set by each town.
